During assessment an evaluator determines the interests, abilities, needs of the participant, as well as going to several actual job sites to determine his or her job preferences. Job Development takes all of the assessment findings into consideration and looks for the best job match.

The Employment Specialist trains the participant on the job, providing step by step instruction and assisting with the job duties. There are two types of job placement and coaching through DCO's Supported Employment:

Individual - Initially, the Employment Specialist works individually with the person all of the time, but as the person learns the job, the coach reduces on-site training time. Eventually the individual achieves independence on the job and they enter employment follow along.

Work Crew - An Employment Specialist trains and supervises a small group of workers on the job and assists them in completing their work. The Employment Specialist stays with the group to provide continuous supervision and training.

Employment Follow Along begins when an employee in the individual model becomes independent and no longer needs the daily assistance of an Employment Specialist. We will visit the work site at least twice monthly and talk to the employee and the employer to ensure that both are satisfied. We will also assist the employee in communicating with his or her employer.

An Employment Specialist may return at any time to the work site to provide retraining. Follow Along is provided for as long as the employee has the job or until he or she decides they do not need our assistance.
